About news portal

The news portal ( http://news.jour.hkbu.edu.hk/ ) is a platform for our journalism students to get hands-on exercise during the study. Historically, the portal’s subsites are corresponding to 4 practicums. Due to curriculum restructure, previous time slots allocated to practicum are shortened. There are also some students with no “J” assigned at a certain time point. In order to help our students find a place for exercise and a place for “official publication” of their works, we made following changes after discussing with all programme directors:

1. Students with no J can publish their work to http://news.jour.hkbu.edu.hk/eng/  or  http://news.jour.hkbu.edu.hk/tc/

2. Selection/ nomination of works — all our colleagues can select/ nominate student works to publish on the “general site” (Eng/ Chi sites) of the portal.

3. Operation, e.g. create/ update articles  — 5 student helpers from 5 J’s will be the liaison person. Once a piece is confirmed in Step 2, the liaison person can handle all the WordPress operations. For students who do not have a J at the time, the student can publish through portal relevant courses. We will notify the course list and their corresponding liaison persons later.

Requirement

The key requirement for this position is a commitment of at least 1 semester. Students who can commit for 1 year or more have higher priority.

The helper will be paid a standard helper fee subject to university policy. We will have a dedicated training workshop for the helpers so you don’t have to worry if there is no prior knowledge. Please note that the portal operation team is more than “porter of articles”. You might learn Google Analytics, HTML, and advanced WordPress administration with Pili Hu, depending on your interest and capacity. So this is a relevant opportunity for those who want to study more of the “backend of new media”.
