DNNers, Happy new year!

We are pleased to announce a 3 days data journalism bootcamp at the end of January. This is an intensive training to get you onboard this fascinating battle ship in the new media ocean. You will spend a fruitful weekend with 60 students from all Hong Kong higher education institutions. The event adopts a “startup weekend” format and features hands-on experience. Friday evening will see an overview of data journalism and team formation. Teams can work at any time from Friday evening all through Sunday afternoon to finish a data journalism project. Saturday is composed of three structured workshops including data collection/ preprocessing, descriptive statistics and data visualisation. Sunday morning will see some industry practitioners/ community contributors sharing tips/ pointers to further broaden the horizon of participants. Most training sessions are optional and attendees can pickup the preferred skills as needed.

Workshop instructors

 

Bess Wang – Data preprocessing in Open Refine

Dr. Bess WANG received her BA in English language and literature from Peking University. She worked as a journalist and editor at Guangzhou Daily for three year before obtaining her first Master’s degree in journalism at Hong Kong Baptist University. She got another Master’s degree in public policy and management from City University of Hong Kong and PhD degree in communication from Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Her research interests focus on the transformation of journalism, journalistic practices and news production. She is now teaching at HKBU and has been teaching data journalism since early 2015.

 

 

Wu Xiaokun – Descriptive statistics in Spreadsheet

 

Xiaokun WU, Ph. D., a professor of South China University of Technology, has taught data journalism since January 2015. Under her supervision, her students won prizes in data journalism competition in 2015 and 2016.

She has published 2 books, over a dozen translated academic papers, and more than 30 journal papers (over 70 percent of which are CSSCI indexed), as well as hosted and participated in many national and provincial research projects on topics concerning online collective actions and the risks of being raised up in a hyper-techno-society. In March 2018, “Data Journalism: Theories and Practices”, a textbook she has edited, will be published by Fudan University Press.

Prof. Wu has won ministerial awards 4 times, including the First Prize in Social Sciences and Humanities Research in Shanghai (2016). She was invited to lecture at different universities, such as Jonkoping University (August 2015 to September), Sun Yat-Sen University(2017), Shenzhen University(2017), and Fudan University(2017).

 

Timothy Yeung – Data visualisation in Tableau

Timothy Yeung is currently a library assistant serving at the Digital and Multimedia Services Section of HKBU Library. He provides support for digital scholarship development through coordinating data curation projects and heavily engaging in data visualizing using a variety of visualization software including Tableau. Timothy received his B.A. in philosophy and Master’s degree in religion studies.

Prior to joining HKBU, he has worked as a social science research staff at EdUHK (formerly HKIEd) for over 6 years. He involved in many UGC funded research projects and is experienced in conducting surveys and interviews as well as consolidating and reporting research data.
